ALL the fun of the seaside will be returning to Newport city centre later this month, thanks to local businesses.

Newport Now Business Improvement District (BID), Friars Walk and the Kingsway Centre have joined forces to bring an Urban Beach to the city centre for the second year running.

Last year’s event was funded entirely by Newport Now – the organisation that represents more than 400 city centre businesses – and spanned the August bank holiday weekend.

Now Friars Walk and the Kingsway Centre have partnered with the BID to expand the Urban Beach into a week-long event.

The beach will be in John Frost Square from August 21 to 28. The event is free of charge and the beach will be open from 10am to 5pm each day.

Newport Now manager Kevin Ward said: “The BID brought the urban beach to Newport city centre for the August bank holiday weekend and it attracted thousands of people.

“This year’s partnership between the BID, Friars Walk and the Kingsway Centre means the beach will be in John Frost Square for a full week.

“We’re such many families will pay a visit to give the kids a treat before they start back to school.”

Friars Walk manager Simon Pullen said: “Following on from fantastic feedback from members of the public, the city centre and tenants, we knew that we had to bring the beach back for another year and I’m thrilled that three key hubs of the Newport business community have come together to make this a reality.

“The beach is the perfect activity for the entire family to enjoy, as there will be bucket and spades for children to make sandcastles with, while parents can enjoy the summer sun as youngsters play. We’ll even have realistic sounds of the coast playing.”

The Urban Beach is delivered by Yellow Bus Events.
