Friars Walk is providing small business owners, entrepreneurs, and anyone who has ever wanted to have a presence in a busy shopping destination, the chance to win space at the centre – completely free.
The opportunity offers local, independent businesses – or just those with a great idea – to rub shoulders with some of the biggest names in retail and leisure, including Superbowl UK, Smiggle, River Island, Next, Wagamama & Nando’s.
“We’re looking for innovative, interesting ideas from entrepreneurial individuals or organisations that want to take their businesses to the next level or get a great idea they have off the ground,” said Friars Walk Centre Director, Simon Pullen. “Independent shops are a key part of the Newport community and we want to support them whenever possible.
“It could be an online retail business that would like to take its first steps in having a physical presence in a shopping centre or just a really exciting concept that needs space to get it off the ground. We’re open to a range of concepts and suggestions and can’t wait to see the entries.”
Friars Walk has teamed up with Newport Now Business Improvement District (BID) to run the competition. Kevin Ward, BID Manager, said: “One of the BID’s area of focus is expanding the independent sector in the city centre and making use of empty shop units, either with pop-ups or permanent tenants. We have had some success already with helping independent find retail space in the city centre and partnering with Friars Walk on this competition is part of that process.”
Entrants are required to provide a description of their business, what sets them apart and why they think they’ll be a great fit for the centre. Shortlisted entrants will then have the chance to trade at the centre before an overall winner is chosen. The winner will be able to trade in the unit for three months for free, in the hopes that they will be able to establish their business and stay at the centre on a long-term basis.
Entries are now open – you can enter here.
Please note that the competition closes at 12pm on 4th August 2021.
